I remember back when Good Monsters came out, we started a thread for every single song and set about trying to interpret what they all meant. I thought it would be fun to do that for the two new songs on 20, although it's a bit tricky due to the lyrics not being available online yet, at least not anywhere that Google is aware of.

On first listen, I was captivated by what I thought was a breezy acoustic love song. Going back a few more times, it struck me that this wasn't a "flowery words" kind of love song - it was almost saying "Do something practical to show your love instead of just talking about it." Fair enough. As a husband who is guilty of sometimes forgetting to speak the words or demonstrate love through actions, I should take that under advisement.

Then I had a sort of revelation - what if the "her" in this song isn't a woman? What if it's the Church? That would bring a lot more weight to simple tasks like "bring the water" and so forth. I know Jars of Clay to be a band that tries their best to practice what they preach, so of course this makes me think of Blood:Water Mission (and only just now, as I look back on some of their older song lyrics, do I realize how much those two key words have meant to the band over the years). But more generally, it makes me think of Jesus's words, "If you love Me, feed my sheep." So it's another in a long line of excellent Jars songs that wonderfulyl depict what Christ's love might look like, without ever needing to name-drop God or Jesus or speak in typical "Christian-ese" terms.

What's nice about both my earlier interpretation and my later one is that either way, it's an extraordinary challenge to me as a person of faith, to put my money (and probably more importantly, my time) where my mouth is.

Hola from Los Angeles!

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find the full, official lyrics for this song. At one point I had most of them written down when I was trying to figure out guitar chords for the song, and I just transcribed what I was hearing. Particularly at the end, there are some lyrics in the background that I don't understand. So what I had was incomplete, and I can't even find that chord sheet now. Sorry.
