It's probably good that you can't physically digest their music. Since, you know, you shouldn't. Unless of course we're not to take your statement literally. In which case, I disagree. Coldplay = excellent.

coldplay is quite good. but they are certainly not the greatest band in the world nor is chris martin a lyrical/musical genius as some would claim. as someone whose followed the band from the getgo, over maniacal fans have sort of ruined coldplay for me. i still think "parachutes" is their best work.

I agree with you Jason; Parachutes is my favorite. I really do like Coldplay..they're in my top 5 favorite bands list. Personally, I think, musically, they're awesome, but lyrically, mediocre. I think I saw Chris Martin say one time something to the extent that he doesn't think Coldplay will ever be remembered for the great lyrics..or something like that.

Eh, I don't like them. Being the strong U2 fan I am I can really pull out the influences. But my dislike for them doesn't strech to a hate.

I, too, am not a Coldplay fan at all. I just can't get into it at all. But I can understand why a lot of people like them so much. Just not for me.

They are a talented band, and might be ranked with some of the greatest, but they are still relatively young compared to other greats. But, How can you deny what they have done for modern music? The impact they've had on the audience is incredible also. I love them, personally and when I got to see them in concert, I considered it (dare I say) like getting to see Led Zeppelin in the height of their popularity. (Please forgive me Mr. Jimmy Page and Robert Plant. I shall listen to "the Immigrant Song" and redeem myself Anyway, I think A Rush of Blood to the Head is their greatest album to date. They have a long way to go . . .we'll see how they age.

I think they've done a lot, actually. They've made Brit-rock, piano-driven rock and mainstream alternative music relevant again, which is certainly noteworthy and significant, even if it isnt 'groundbreaking', per se.

See, I just have a really hard time giving Coldplay that much credit at all. I think they will most likely be a defining band from this time period, but they are far from groundbreaking. And I just can't concede that they made Brit-rock, piano-driven rock, or mainstream alternative music relevant again. Were any of them ever irrelevant? Brit-rockers come onto the scene every couple of years it seems like, and I can't put Coldplay in the same British influence category as like the Beatles and Zeppelin and even Oasis really.. And bands like Matchbox 20 were doing that piano rock thing for a while as well. I just can't get into Coldplay like so many other people can and do. Eh, to each his own.

There was another British band called Travis that landed in America about the same time Coldplay did. I actually thought they had more potential than Coldplay. But they've since been relegated to obscurity, at least in the States.

i like Coldplay, X&Y sure didn't make me like them more, but not less either.. there was maybe 3 tracks i liked off there.. but the Speed Of Sound, Fix You, and Talk b-sides are good. Talk b-sides best IMO

I was disappointed with X&Y -- I definately dont think its as good as their previous album. I did like "Speed of Sound" and "Swallowed in the Sea", but thats about it. Coldplay makes me sleepy.

Living in Britain I get to hear a lot of Coldplay. I think they are waaayyy over rated. They have this habit of writting really annoying songs that sound very simple. Some of their tunes are pretty good though.

Coldplay over writes their songs.. their trying to be deep.. but it ended up being so shallow... they write songs that are too simple but they push it to make it sound complex.. and it annoys me... really annoys me... i think their songs sounds the same.. and the meaning of their songs are just the same... i dont know... i just dont dig them..

I believe that Coldplay's contribution to the music community is centered around melody... Pop music has become less and less dependent on a good melody, more on rhythm, and celebrity, and Coldplay has helped, along with Keane, Travis, Snow Patrol and a host of other European "soft rock" bands....(most american bands would never get the same kinds of light weight songs past the critics) ...to keep melody driven music in the public ear. No, they are not one of the most innovative bands, but one can hardly expect a Pop band to be ultra-innovative...it goes against the definition. we relegate the responsibility of pushing musical envelopes to bands who love playing in basements, and in college music laboratories... and I am thankful for both of them.
If I remove the necessity to be excessively innovative as a criteria, bands like Coldplay, Killers, Travis, and Keane rise to the top of melody driven music, as some of the best. I fully respect the consistency Coldplay has had in writing great melodies over the course of their mildly short career. And have seen that they were part of rebuilding a pop music scene that had been dominated by a lot of crappy novelty artists without any real musical abilities. They were one of the first bands to push past the solo artist era we were in. So...they have made a contribution.
And it is also wonderful that they seem to be a band with some conscience and depth...even if Chris has a hard time communicating it through song. Give them five more years.... If they are still making music, it will be serious music about serious things. just my thoughts on the matter. -dan

This is very interesting. Most friends I know not only likes Coldplay, it's their favorite. Most of them are in their late mid-to-late 20's....so I don't know if this has anything to do with an age group. When I say favorite, I mean they've even said that if they were stuck on a desserted island and can only have one CD with them. It'd be Coldplay. But this is when the band was still semi-new. But I think they're were a little disappointed with X&Y, so I don't know what they're status is with fans. So was I, though they're not my favorite band. I was thinking, maybe their next album will be better. But I admire Chris as musician, and I love it when a band/artist that is unique to the current popular get a lot of radio play. Though I did have the hardest time listening to "Hey Ya" from Outkast. Actually when it first came out, I could not stand the guy singing it. After a long while, then I started to get use to the melody - then it wasn't as terrible.

Dan, thanks for saying that. It makes much more sense than what I was trying to say. Coldplay has made a significant contribution to music and I'm glad you brought your artist's prospective to that issue and clarified it. And to everyone who has mentioned Travis, they too are a good band, but I think they've been shuffled off into obscurity as other Brit bands have taken the lead. They're bigger in their home country, but are worth a listen.

Yea, haven't round for awhile but figured I'd resurface...
anyway, I'm going to a Coldplay concert Feb 28th in Louisville. My hubby and I have been trying to catch up w/ them for awhile and were either too slow or broke when they came around. Not this time. Fiona Apple is opening for them. Her new CD is incredible, check it out.
Anyway, I had a conversation w/ Dan about Coldplay at the Birmingham show in Nov. He said he had tickets to one of their shows but had to give them away b/c Jars was playing the same evening. He found out later that his seats were just rows from the stage!

I saw Coldplay in Nashville back in September. And I must say . . .it is one awesome show. I was in an ampitheater that held over 25,000 people and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them were on their feet the entire show. It is truly an incredible experience. Plus, getting to see Chris Martin live in person is pretty cool too. Let me know how it goes!

It wouldn't be impossible for Coldplay to leave a greater legacy than U2, if they continue on the path they are on now. They haven't done anything groundbreaking, but they make great melodies with decent lyrics to boot. Travis is the best Scottish band of all time.

These are the kind of Coldplay comments that just leave me baffled. No offense, but there is absolutely no way Coldplay will ever leave a greater legacy than U2.

I'm curious as to why you think Chris Martin has a bad attitude, GuitarChick? Like what has he said? Yeah that poor girl, who names their child after a fruit??
Personally i love Coldplay- the most out of all the European bands out there. Their lyrics may not be the most complex, but since when do complex lyrics=good music? I think what I like about them the most is how their music touches you-how it speaks to your soul. A lot of "oldies" are famous not because they had ingenous lyrics, but because of the passion in their melodies and truth in their lyrics. I think Coldplay's popularity relies heavily on that-their passion and knack for making beautiful melodies. Also they are one of the select few who can perform just as good live.
I think Snow Patrol is really good Brit band too, though I have never really got into Travis...

that is true. when the band's name "coldplay" is mentioned, I hear the melody playing in my mind but I can't easily recall the name of the song, the lyrics or even just what the song was about. I've seen them live a couple of times and have only one of their CDs -- the live compilation one but still, it's just the melody that gets stuck in my mind and not much else.
i'm not a big fan, not a hater either. i watched their concert once coz i was curious (they are pretty popular) and I enjoyed the concert. when they had another scheduled show at my city,i watched it again only because i remembered enjoying the first concert even though i can't much remember the songs. is that weird?

Coldplay said they were going to be bigger than U2? I'm confused. Chris has said in interviews many times how he admires U2.
