I was talking to someone yesterday and they told me that bands like our fine Jars will take ideas for songs from fans, Dan, is that true?

Major copyright issues there. A fan could be well-meaning and it could be a good idea, but I think the band's safer recording ideas that are unique to them.

Heck, if you've got that good of an idea for a song, write and record it yourself.

I think that might only come into play if they took a full lyric from a fan. If it was just, "Hey, why don't you write a song about escaping a dark past," then it shouldn't be a problem, since you can't copyright a vague idea like that. Even if they had an idea for a hook, you can't copyright a single line unless you want to argue that it is your entire song.

Think of all the copyrighted works that have lines in common, they have enough different to make them clearly distinct works, so there' isn't any real conflict.

Besides, the fan would have had to own a copyright for it to be an issue. How many people do you know who copyright vague ideas or single lines? How many of those people would sue a band for writing a full, distinct song from their idea?

You have a point. But I still hold that the band's full of good ideas on their own and doesn't need our help.

Well, if I would be allowed to suggest an idea to the Jars, I would suggest that they would cover the song Jars Of Clay, written and performed by Randy Matthews, Danny Taylor and Mike Johnson and released on their 1976 Matthews, Taylor and Johnson album. I just thought the title was very appropriate

And I don't need any credit or money for this excellent idea.

I'm not sure if this is what your friend was referring to, but when Jars were still students at Greenville College (my memory's a little hazy on the exact details, but I know this is close), one of their friends made a bet or a dare that Jars (or Dan specifically, can't remember) couldn't write a song centering around the title, "Sunflower Song." Jars took the bet, but instead ended up writing "Boy On A String." They tacked "Sunflower Song" in parentheses to the title of the track on the back of the Frail demo as a joke.

That's the only thing I can think of where a rumor that Jars take song suggestions from fans would come from
