I believe we are hoping to save lives. This is the only part that we have any real tangible control over, God alone saves souls.

The Gospel provokes us to love and serve the poor. This is our act of worship, we feel, however, that it is not a wholistic view of the Gospel to walk into a community in order to save souls... since the only quantifiable way of doing this is via alter calls and taking numbers... this often skews the actual heart and mind-set of walking into a community to serve them and love them well.

We want to walk into a community without an agenda except to listen and come along side of the people. ANY other agenda even an evangelical one can be harmful.

We don't give water so that we can convert to Christianity. we give water because the Gospel tells us to give water. (period)

I hope this helps. peace- dan

sometimes, i do not believe on the success of altar calls and somekinda like those, too! but i cannot deny that many were made christians through that.

the "harmful" term is what i disagree. Ya, i know it's not wholistic, but neither harmful. remember Paul saying "no matter motive they have, as long as Christ is preached."  There we can sense that Paul is urging us to preach Christ. Evangelizing must always be in our agenda, (everyday), Jesus said that. i'm afraid i myself cannot do that. or you?

I think that setting an example and showing love through our actions is far more important than any words. In this case, building wells and showing love to our brothers and sisters around the world is a ministry in and of itself, and I think its great that there are "no strings attatched." For in going there and serving selflessly, a Christ-like example is set. When thier hearts are ready, questions will be asked, and at that time I beleive God will use us to spread His word. But I think the words are, and always should be, secondary to our actions.

I think it is important to be able to differentiate what it means to "preach Christ." I think there are many forms of a gospel... and many psuedo-christian organizations with agendas to preach a kind of gospel can most definitely do a great deal of harm. It is not in the true preaching of Christ that any harm comes, but rather, it is in the manipulated and non-relational versions of the gospel that are preached and by which a community can be effected in the worst kinds of ways. This is what I speak against.

I hope this makes sense. peace- dan

Eleemosynary basically means supported by charity. Hope that helped!
